This post doesn't directly address the problem the op is having (unless he sees one of the installation issues with ridge vents) but I just thought I would pass this along to others thinking about their use. There should be equal number is square inches of the intake and exhaust vents. The gable vents reduce the air flow from the lower ones. Gable vents should be blocked to increase the air flow from the lower eaves vents to decrease hot spots. There shouldn't be a difference of more than 18 -24" between the heights of the ridges unless the attic is partitioned. Many homes do not have sufficient footage of level roof ridges. I see many of the homes in my neighborhood that have issues. and have not taken the time to read the manufacturer's do's and don'ts. Most roofers have no working knowledge of thermal dynamics etc. Ridge vents have installation issues which many installers are not aware of. After talking to a manufacturer of all types of ventilation systems including ridge vents, I went with coastal certified wind turbines because of their efficiency. On a side note, I looked at ridge vents when replacing my roof. Since roofs are generally put on from the bottom up, redoing a ridge vent should be a fairly simply and cheap process. I'm assuming you have some sort of mechanical rigid ridge venting with wider openings and there might not be much you can do short of tearing it up and installing a different ridge vent.

Even then I've never seen that stuff leak. What kind of ridge venting do you have? Around here, most use the fiber mat kind that is about 10 to 12 inches wide and is sandwich between the roof shingles and the ridge shingles and I've never seen it leak and wouldn't expect it to leak short of a hurricane force wind carrying rain. Is there a material that will allow the necessary air flow and ventilation but block the water? Some kind of foam/styrofoam material that can stand up to heat and cold for a number of years? it looks like rain and /or snow has been blowing into the ridge vent. My handyman looked at it inside and out and the shingles are fine, etc.

I noticed some discoloration in my garage ceiling that indicated a leak - it is directly under and parallel with the roof peak.
